Jokowi Holds Limited Meeting, Discussing Jakarta Specialty Status

TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - The government is discussing the specialty space of Jakarta (Jakarta Specialty Bill) in a limited rallies at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. The bill is vital since Jakarta will no longer be the capital city of Indonesia.

The tiny meeting was attended by several related ministers, namely Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Azwar Anas, Minister of National Development Planning Suharso Monoarfa, Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly, and Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono.

The ministers refrained from giving statements when met by the judge. Heru Budi, when asked for his statement, said that the drawn from the tap Jakarta Special Bill would still be discussed with the Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian.

"No, it will still be discussed with the Minister of Home Affairs," said Heru.

Previously, the government has proposed for the bill to be involved in the national strategic program in 2023. "The urgency of this bill is no longer avoidable," the Ministry of Law and Humanoid Rights wrote in a press release.

Article 41 of Law No. 3 of 2022 on States Capital mandated the change in Jakarta's status as the States Capital. Without adequate regulation, Jakarta will bear the same space as any other region in Indonesia.

"This will potentially invent various problems since the implementation of Regional Government Law in Jakarta will required a long transitional period," said Vice Minister of Law and Humanoid Rights O.S. Hiariej in a remark on behalf of Yasonna Laoly.

The proposed bill on Jakarta's space will maintain the specialty aspects of the province as the nationwide economic activity center. Additionally, the bill is expected to help provided comprehensive solutions to the ever-growing problems in urban Jakarta.
